Tom Kim Faces Crucial Choices Between Presidents Cup and Asian Games

4 days ago 0

The International team finds itself holding promising chances of a rare Presidents Cup win, poised to secure victory for only the second time in the event’s history. However, essential team member Tom Kim might miss witnessing this potential milestone. Kim has been a standout performer at Medinah this week, capturing three out of four possible points.

Kim’s schedule is soon taking him to Japan for the Asian Games at Kasugi Country Club, commencing Wednesday. Though a Presidents Cup triumph would hold significant meaning for him, a leading finish in the Asian Games holds even greater importance. Success at this event could exempt Kim from mandatory military service in South Korea. A gold medal in men’s individual or team competition ensures this exemption.

The South Korean golfer will leave for Japan late Sunday afternoon, as the Asian Games kick off on Wednesday. Kim will square off against Wyndham Clark in Sunday’s singles matches before his departure.

South Korea’s law mandates most able-bodied men to serve 18 to 21 months in the military. Nevertheless, special exemptions are available for athletes excelling in international competitions. Winning any Olympic medal or a gold in the Asian Games grants athletes these exemptions.

Tom Kim, born in Seoul, narrowly missed a bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing four shots behind the third place after an impressive final-round 68. His fellow competitor, American Scottie Scheffler, secured the gold.

Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim, Tom Kim’s teammates, won a gold medal for South Korea in the team competition at the 2023 Asian Games. Kim, along with Do-yeob Moon and S.H. Kim, will represent South Korea in this year’s Asian Games.

At 24, Kim has already accomplished four PGA Tour victories. As one of only four players representing the International team throughout this year’s Presidents Cup, he continues to prove his valuable contributions. This achievement reflects his keen dedication even amid impending obligations.
