Toddler Finds Comfort in Unusual Bedtime Toy

4 days ago 0

A mother found herself surprised by her toddler’s unusual request for his favorite toy—the leaf blower—before bedtime. This unexpected choice has become a nightly ritual.

Sleep deprivation is a common issue for parents, especially in the early years of raising children. A 2019 study published in Sleep showed that parents’ sleep patterns are affected for years after the birth of a child. The data from 4,659 parents indicated that mothers lose more sleep than fathers in the first three months after birth, averaging an hour less per night, compared to fathers’ 15-minute decrease. Even when children are between 4 and 6 years old, parents often do not regain pre-pregnancy sleep levels.

Anne-Maree Leonard, a mother from Perth, Australia, faces these challenges with her two young boys under two years old. Her eldest son, Angus, had trouble sleeping and made an unexpected request: he wanted his toy leaf blower.

“It was around two months ago,” Leonard told Newsweek. “He wouldn’t go to sleep and kept asking for his ‘blower.’” Her son, Angus, has a fascination with helping his dad blow leaves, so they got him a toy leaf blower, his favorite toy.

The toy replicates the sound of a real leaf blower, without the airflow. Although the noise could be disruptive, Leonard decided to let Angus try sleeping with it. The result was surprising—Angus fell asleep quickly, using the toy’s comforting noise as a lullaby.

“We were amazed that this toy became his comfort item,” Leonard said. Angus now cuddles it to sleep, using the sound to relax himself at night.

Though Angus enjoys other toys like a chainsaw, toolbox, and drill, the leaf blower holds a special place. This could hint at a future interest in skilled trades. Leonard’s relief is evident as Angus drifts off to the sound of his toy nightly.

Research supports the idea that constant noise aids sleep. A study from Archives of Disease in Childhood found 80% of newborns fell asleep quickly with white noise, compared to 25% in a silent environment. Regular noises can soothe children by blocking sudden sounds.

Leonard shared footage of Angus sleeping with his leaf blower on social media, resonating with many parents willing to try anything for a restful night.

For Leonard, bringing laughter to her family and seeing Angus sleep comfortably are invaluable moments amid the challenges of parenting.
