Dick Cheney’s Final Years: A Conflict with Modern GOP

11 hours ago 0

Though eventually critical of Donald Trump, former Vice President Dick Cheney stood in opposition to transparency, the rule of law, and constitutional values. His role as a key figure in shaping today’s Republican Party is undeniable, despite his later years being marked by conflict within that same party.

In 2017, Cheney attended Trump’s inauguration, an event marking significant political shifts in the United States. The event was captured by photographer Win McNamee from Getty Images. In contrast, by 2022, Cheney became a vocal critic of Trump, underscoring a major transformation in his political stance.

Cheney made a strong public statement in a 2022 television advertisement. He recorded this in support of his daughter Liz Cheney, who ran for Congressional reelection. Liz faced an uphill battle as one of the few Republican voices against President Trump. In the ad, Cheney described Trump as a recklessly irresponsible figure for the GOP, a party that had once been heavily influenced by the Cheneys.

The Nation, a publication established by abolitionists in 1865, has long provided insight into political and cultural developments. It serves as a critical and progressive platform. Dick Cheney passed away Monday at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy of both influence and dissent within the Republican Party.
