The Chicago White Sox capitalized on early momentum to secure a win in Game 2 of the American League wild-card series against the Houston Astros. Initially leading by four runs, the team faced a challenge as their lead dwindled to one in the fifth inning. Anthony Kay entered as a relief pitcher with two on and one out, managing to get Yordan Alvarez to line out to left field. Isaac Paredes then walked, loading the bases, but Jose Altuve lined out, ending the threat.
The momentum shifted back to the White Sox with Chase Meidroth’s three-run home run in the sixth inning, securing a 7-3 victory. This win, observed by 36,015 fans at Daikin Park, enabled the White Sox to sweep the wild-card matchup and advance to the American League Division Series. They will face the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field starting Saturday.
In the first inning, the White Sox built a strong foundation, scoring four runs. Sam Antonacci doubled, and after a sharp single from Kyle Teel, Antonacci scored. A fielding error by Nick Allen allowed Miguel Vargas on base. Andrew Benintendi’s RBI single added to their lead, and a misthrow by Lucas Spence saw another run scored. Benintendi then scored off Tristan Peters’ RBI single, prompting the Astros to remove starter Hunter Brown after only two-thirds of an inning.
The Astros reduced the deficit with a solo homer by Jeremy Peña in the first and another by Cam Smith in the second. Altuve’s homer in the fourth brought Houston closer, cutting the lead to 4-3. Sox pitcher Sean Burke allowed these runs over four innings but kept control with five strikeouts and no walks.
Huascar Brazobán and Anthony Kay handled pitching duties in a tense fifth inning. The Sox offense struggled early on but rebounded in the sixth, initiated by Benintendi’s walk. Bryan Abreu then replaced Peter Lambert, only to face Meidroth’s decisive home run.
This victory marked a significant achievement for the White Sox, being their first postseason series win since the 2005 World Series.
