Recently released police body camera footage reveals crucial moments leading to the arrest of Luigi Mangione by Altoona, Pennsylvania, officers. This arrest concluded a five-day search following the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown hotel in 2024.
The footage, shown during a suppression hearing in December 2025, captures officers cuffing Mangione and searching his belongings. Mangione’s defense later claimed the backpack search violated his rights. This marks the footage’s first public release beyond courtrooms.
The incident began with a 911 tip in December 2024. A man believed to be the suspect was sighted at a McDonald’s in Altoona. In the video, officers question Mangione about a fake ID under the name “Mark Rosario.” He later confessed to lying about his identity.
Officers transported Mangione to the police station, where a strip search was conducted. They found a firearm in his backpack, which prosecutors linked to the crime scene. A judge ruled most evidence collected during this search would be admissible in court.
Legal expert Richard Shorenstein observed officers in the footage seemed unconcerned about safety, raising questions about the prosecution’s justification for searching the backpack at the restaurant.
Mangione pled guilty to federal charges, including interstate stalking resulting in death. He also faces second-degree murder, weapons, and forgery charges. A previous first-degree murder charge was dropped last year during his state trial.
Sentencing for federal charges is set for December. The status of the state charges remains undecided.
