On a recent Wednesday, passengers on FlyDubai’s Flight 1073 faced a harrowing ordeal. By Friday, these strangers had become a family bonded by bravery. Daniel Schlichter, Zvika Manes, Tal Samuel, and Asaf Rajuan were among the passengers who experienced the frightening freefall and managed to avert disaster.
Schlichter recalled the terrifying descent, describing it as the longest minute of his life. The Boeing 737 Max was plunging into the Arabian Desert at near the speed of sound after the co-pilot from Oman, Hamam al Hamami, attacked Captain Smit Machchhar. Machchhar fought to regain control as the plane dropped 14,000 feet in seconds. Less than 30 seconds from impact, passengers faced powerful G-forces.
Inside the cockpit, the captain found himself under attack. As he recounted to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he was struck on the head while trying to stop the co-pilot, who aimed to crash the plane. Fortunately, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, where passengers were waiting to help.
Zvika Manes sat in the first row with his family. He heard his daughter shout about the pilot being stabbed. Aware of the immediate danger, Manes decided to act, transforming fear into determination. Alongside Rajuan, Schlichter, and others, they ran to assist the injured captain.
Tal Samuel reflected on the actions of his fellow passengers; ordinarily calm and polite individuals, they became fiercely protective under threat. Together with an Israeli plumber, Yaniv Hayoun, they subdued the co-pilot, who had been banned from flying in Oman due to extremist views.
As chaos ensued at the cockpit’s entrance, Samuel noticed off-duty pilots nearby. One of these pilots reached the controls and stabilized the aircraft. Meanwhile, Captain Machchhar was suffering from severe injuries and needed immediate medical attention.
A call went out for medical assistance, and Dr. Shota Musaev, a dentist on board, volunteered to treat Machchhar’s stab wounds. Musaev feared the captain could succumb to his injuries and urged the crew to land quickly.
The nearest airport was in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where diplomatic tensions with Israel heightened concerns. Despite initial fears, the passengers were warmly received upon landing. Captain Machchhar was taken to a hospital for recovery, with Dr. Musaev staying by his side at night.
Dr. Musaev expressed admiration for the captain’s heroism, noting a deep bond formed through their collective efforts. In Hebrew, he stated, ‘If he hadn’t been smart and heroic, we would not be alive. On the other hand, if we had not been heroes, he would not be alive.’
This extraordinary incident spotlighted the courage and cooperation of passengers and crew, exemplifying the power of unity in life-threatening situations.
