Tragic Discovery and Ongoing Investigation

Bryn Walker co-founders, Bryan Walker and Michelle Min, were discovered dead outside their Oakland Hills residence with gunshot wounds. Law enforcement is investigating the incident but has not identified who fired the weapon. The deaths have deeply affected both family and neighbors.

Newsweek approached the Oakland Police Department for comments via email outside of regular office hours on Monday. The initial business venture that started in 1992 as a small Berkeley retail store has evolved into a nationally known women’s clothing brand, according to the company’s website. It operates six company-owned stores and reaches about 1,000 boutiques across the U.S.

Shooting Details

On October 2, police responded to reports of gunshots in the Panoramic Hill area close to the University of California, Berkeley. They found Walker and Min outside their home. Officers attempted lifesaving procedures before paramedics arrived, yet both were declared dead at the scene. The Oakland Police Department leads the investigation and has recovered a firearm. They haven’t ruled out the possibility of a murder-suicide.

According to reports, a neighbor who heard gunfire found the couple outside their residence. Police state they are not seeking further suspects and believe there is no ongoing risk to the local community.

Murder-Suicide Suspicions

Michelle Min’s brother, Paul Min, told the Los Angeles Times that he suspected Walker shot his sister and then himself. However, he expressed difficulty reconciling this belief with the character of the brother-in-law he had known for nearly forty years. Paul Min described Walker as “honest,” “responsible,” and “hardworking.”

Paul Min noted that Walker’s mental health appeared to deteriorate following substantial financial losses from risky investments. Walker had previously suggested that he, along with Paul and Michelle Min, “end things,” contributing to concerns about his mental state.

Concerns Over Walker’s Mental Health

Paul Min stated that his concerns about Walker’s mental health increased in the days preceding the shooting. He and Michelle had considered psychiatric treatment for Walker, even discussing possible institutionalization. Paul later found a list of treatment facilities and speculated that Walker may have learned of this plan.

While Walker experienced mental distress, Michelle Min remained hopeful over changing financial circumstances. Her brother recalled her interest in relocating away from the Bay Area.

Establishment of Bryn Walker Brand

The couple met in the Midwest during the 1980s and later moved to California. Michelle Min pursued fine arts at Washington University in St. Louis, while Walker studied philosophy at Iowa State University. Their venture began as a small Berkeley store that evolved as Michelle Min started designing clothing and accessories.

Family Memories of Michelle Min

Paul Min reflected on his sister’s life, stating that she played a significant caregiving role after their family immigrated from Korea to the U.S. in 1977. With parents working multiple jobs, Michelle Min helped with household responsibilities.

Both Michelle Min and Walker cared for their aging parents and supported Paul Min during his Stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Their pet, a miniature Australian shepherd named Pip, was found at their home and is currently with a friend.

Community Vigil

Berkeley residents held a vigil, with attendees from various parts of the community participating. Janice Thomas, who attended the vigil, shared that even without personally knowing the couple, the event was unsettling for everyone involved.

Investigation Status

The Oakland Police Department has yet to make any final determinations about the case. They are seeking any information, photos, or video related to the incident. For those in emotional distress, help is available via the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by dialing or texting 988.
