The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians have faced off frequently this season, meeting 16 times between the regular season and the first three games of the American League Division Series. The scorelines have been remarkably close, with the Guardians scoring 69 runs and the Sox 68 runs. Sox manager Will Venable expressed his admiration for the matchups ahead of Thursday’s Game 4 at Rate Field, stating, “I think we’re very different teams, but the way that these clubs are built, there’s a clear respect for each other. Both teams play hard and display immense talent.”
Venable believes the series has been “fun to watch” due to its competitive nature. He mentioned that someone will eventually come out on top, but emphasized the enjoyment in witnessing the season-long battle between the clubs.
As the Sox hold a 2-1 lead in the ALDS, here’s what fans should anticipate before Game 4.
Game 4 Preparations
Sox second baseman Chase Meidroth ended the seventh inning striking out in Game 3 against the Guardians on October 7, 2026. Venable described Game 3 as a learning experience for Game 4. “The environment impacted us,” Venable noted. “We had one of our highest chase rates of the year. Now, we know what to expect against Guardians starter Parker Messick.”
The Sox struck out 19 times in Game 3, a record for a nine-inning postseason game in MLB history. “The crowd gets you amped up,” said Sox outfielder Tristan Peters. “We may have chased pitches we normally wouldn’t, but having more patience will be key.”
Facing a Familiar Opponent
Thursday’s game marks the sixth encounter with Guardians’ pitcher Parker Messick. Previously, during Game 1 at Progressive Field, Messick allowed two runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings. Despite the 3-0 loss, he struck out six and walked two. Peters expressed confidence, saying, “We’ve faced him a lot, and I believe our guys can hit him well.”
Pitching Strategy
White Sox pitcher Hagen Smith, available after throwing two-thirds of an inning the previous Wednesday, will start Game 4. Options for extended innings include Erick Fedde and Anthony Kay. In the recent outing, Smith conceded one run on one hit while walking two, including a three-run triple to Jo Adell.
Coach Venable assessed Smith’s performance positively despite the struggle with walks. “Free passes hurt us, walking 10 as a team,” Venable analyzed. “But Hagen is our guy, and we trust him to start us strong.”
Below is the White Sox lineup for Game 4, with Smith as the starter:
- 2B Chase Meidroth
- LF Randal Grichuk
- 3B Miguel Vargas
- 1B Munetaka Murakami
- DH Tommy Pham
- CF Brenton Doyle
- C Kyle Teel
- RF Braden Montgomery
- SS Colson Montgomery
