The UnPopulist, an independent publication, aims to protect liberal democracy from authoritarianism worldwide.
Recent findings from a survey conducted by the Institute for the Study of Modern Authoritarianism (ISMA) reveal a significant increase in cynicism among voters who supported President Kamala Harris. This change has emerged since the presidential election in 2024.
Before the election, ISMA’s August 2024 survey showed that 59% of individuals intending to vote for Harris strongly felt that one or more members of America’s elite had acted against people like them due to selfish interests.
By June of this year, this perception grew to encompass 69% of her actual voters, marking a 10-point increase. This represents the only statistically significant change in attitudes among the four populist views tracked by the survey.
Despite these findings, the survey did not indicate any increased allegiance to a political leader or tolerance for authoritarian tactics among Harris supporters.
