The Upcoming Will County Sheriff Election: Candidates Jones and Reilly

2 hours ago 0

Introduction to the Candidates

Will County voters will choose a new sheriff this year to succeed Sheriff Mike Kelley, who is retiring. A Republican, James ‘Jim’ Reilly, will compete against Democrat Patrick Jones for the role, both of whom are veteran employees of the sheriff’s office. Kelley, serving since 2014, opted not to run again.

James ‘Jim’ Reilly’s Background

James ‘Jim’ Reilly, aged 60, is a Will County sheriff’s deputy with 24 years in law enforcement. His expertise extends to being a K-9 officer, juvenile officer, and part of an undercover organized crime unit working with federal agencies. His academic credentials include a doctorate in criminal justice with a minor in global leadership. His research emphasizes enhancing community ties and policing strategies.

“That dissertation is being used throughout the country,” Reilly said.

Patrick Jones’s Background

Patrick Jones, aged 50, is a sergeant with 25 years at the sheriff’s office. His roles have included corrections, crime scene investigations, SWAT operations, and leading the crisis negotiation team. Jones has led over 40 major investigations and earned two life-saving awards. His involvement in a case led to the conviction of a landlord responsible for a racially charged murder.

“All of that and how many critical incidents I’ve been on and managed as a supervisor, I think makes me a better candidate for this office,” Jones said.

Key Issues and Initiatives

Patrick Jones’s Approach

Jones emphasizes visibility of officers and community engagement for problem-solving. He advocates for transparency, especially regarding use-of-force incidents. His priorities include expanding mental health resources for officers and inmates, reducing recidivism through training programs, and drawing inspiration from similar initiatives in DuPage and Cook counties.

“I believe these programs will help reduce recidivism,” Jones said.

James ‘Jim’ Reilly’s Approach

Reilly focuses on crime reduction and public safety, promoting intelligence-based policing to target high-crime areas. He highlights cooperation with state and federal agencies as crucial. His interest in criminal justice reform criticizes the SAFE-T Act, seeking changes through legislative work.

“I definitely want to work closely with legislation and our political leaders to reform the SAFE-T Act,” Reilly said.

License Plate Readers and Law Enforcement Technology

Both candidates recognize the role of technology in law enforcement, particularly license plate reader cameras. Reilly supports their use while advocating for strict data policies. Jones shares privacy concerns but acknowledges benefits, such as solving crimes rapidly. He proposes regular audits to ensure responsible usage.

“This is an amazing technology but it needs serious guidelines in place to protect citizens,” Jones said.

Tackling Specific Crimes Using Technology

Jones seeks to protect vulnerable groups like seniors and children from specific crimes, aiming to educate communities about financial fraud and online predators. Reilly wants to introduce community programs to safeguard senior citizens against financial scams, collaborating with banks to monitor irregularities.

“We need to sit down and start addressing where artificial intelligence is going and how that is going to affect law enforcement,” Reilly said.
