Hurricane Simon’s Rapid Intensification
Hurricane Simon is gaining strength swiftly off the Pacific coast of Mexico. According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, its maximum sustained winds have surged to near 90 mph (150 kph) as of Friday. Projections show Simon escalating to a formidable Category 4 hurricane by Saturday. It is predicted to approach the tourist-heavy regions in south-western and west-central Mexico.
Hurricane Isaias on the Rise
Early today, Hurricane Isaias is strengthening, with sustained winds reaching 110 mph (175 km/h), nearing Category 3 intensity. An update from the National Hurricane Center advises that, “Preparations should be rushed to completion as the weather will deteriorate quickly today.” Isaias is anticipated to evolve into a major hurricane this morning, though a slight weakening could occur before reaching land. Nonetheless, it is expected to remain a hazardous hurricane.
Analyzing the Atlantic Hurricane Season
This year saw an unusual delay in the Atlantic hurricane season, with no hurricanes forming by late September, a first in 75 years. Isaias marks the first hurricane of the 2026 season, initially predicted to be less active than typical. In May, the National Weather Service forecasted a 55% probability of a below-normal season, which increased to 75% in August. Current predictions estimate 7 to 13 named storms, and 2 to 6 may become hurricanes, with 0 to 2 reaching “major” status. Normally, an Atlantic hurricane season has 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes, says NOAA. Isaias is the ninth named storm this year, with previous storms mostly being tropical in mid-August through September.
In comparison, last year’s first hurricane, Erin, emerged in August as a Category 5 storm forming near Cape Verde without making U.S. landfall. The Atlantic hurricane season spans June 1 to November 30.
Preparation Activities in Alabama and Florida
In anticipation of Hurricane Isaias, Florida and Alabama residents are taking preparatory measures. In Gulf Breeze, Florida, store shelves, such as the bread aisle at Walmart, are empty as people stock up. Meanwhile, Donald Knapp secures his Islander Ice Cream restaurant with plywood in the same area.
Across at Orange Beach, Alabama, workers install shutters at Doc’s Seafood Shack while Taylor Chandler is spotted carrying sandbags.
Isaias: First in the Atlantic, Pacific Activity High
Isaias aims for a Gulf Coast landfall tonight or early tomorrow as the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, marking a later onset than some previous years. Conversely, the Pacific has been more active with several hurricanes affecting Hawaii. These include Hurricane Lala, which claimed two lives in August, and Lowell, which caused damage in Kauai. Hurricane Nolo recently bypassed Hawaii.
The first eastern Pacific hurricane this season, Fausto, formed mid-July. NOAA anticipated a more vigorous eastern Pacific season, predicting a 70% likelihood of above-average activity from May 15 to November 30.
Colorado State University scientist Phil Klotzbach reported in September that changed patterns stem from an El Niño system. This natural climate phenomenon results from increased sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific when equatorial winds weaken, reducing cold water upwelling.
