Guardians Defeat White Sox with Record Strikeouts in ALDS

1 hour ago 0

The Cleveland Guardians experienced a breeze from the bats of the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night, needing no air conditioning. Guardians pitchers struck out a record 21 White Sox batters in nine innings, winning 2-0 in Game 5 of the American League Division Series. This victory completed their comeback from a 2-0 series deficit.

Gavin Williams started for Cleveland and delivered an outstanding performance. Of the 21 White Sox batters he faced, 12 were struck out. He pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, two walks, and a hit batsman. A significant moment came when José Ramírez hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, providing the necessary support. The pitch was notably 8.88 inches off the ground, marking the lowest postseason home run since at least 2008 and the lowest in Ramirez’s career.

The bullpen, featuring Erik Sabrowski, Evan Gaddis, and Cade Smith, successfully secured the final 10 outs, adding nine strikeouts—one by Sabrowski and four each by Gaddis and Smith. This group ensured the Guardians’ victory. Ramírez had a challenging season, with his batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage at their lowest since 2015. Yet, over the series’ last three games, he recorded five hits in 12 at-bats, including two homers, a triple, and a double.

“Ramírez’s late-series surge was crucial for the Guardians, who reversed their fortunes in this series.”

The White Sox had a high strikeout rate during the regular season, ranking fifth in the league. On Saturday, their strikeout rate soared to 63.6%. Initially, they won the first two games at Progressive Field, putting the Guardians in a tough position. However, Cleveland responded by winning three elimination games in a row.

The Guardians now advance to the American League Championship Series, facing the Tampa Bay Rays. This marks Cleveland’s second trip to this round in three seasons. The Rays recently swept the New York Yankees. The ALCS opens Monday in Florida. The series winner will meet either the Los Angeles Dodgers, aiming for a threepeat, or the Milwaukee Brewers, who are looking to upset the reigning champions.
