RJ Mitte’s Legacy Beyond ‘Breaking Bad’

RJ Mitte, the acclaimed actor recognized for his portrayal of Walter “Flynn” White Jr. in the popular series “Breaking Bad,” has passed away at the age of 34. His representative confirmed the news, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.

In the groundbreaking AMC series, Mitte played the son of Bryan Cranston’s character, Walter White, a high school teacher turned drug kingpin, and Anna Gunn’s character, Skyler White. Walter Jr., portrayed by Mitte, was a character with cerebral palsy, a condition that Mitte shares in real life.

Sean Riley, Mitte’s representative, highlighted the authenticity Mitte brought to the role by drawing from his personal experiences. His portrayal was applauded for raising awareness about disability inclusion.

The ensemble cast of “Breaking Bad” earned Mitte a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2014 for their outstanding performance as the drama neared its conclusion. Beyond acting, Mitte actively advocated for disability rights. His efforts aimed at elevating awareness and pushing for expanded roles for people with disabilities in Hollywood.

In 2014, Mitte was honored with the SAG-AFTRA Howard Russell Award, celebrating the legacy of the first Oscar-winning actor with a disability.

His advocacy extended to his involvement as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s. Furthermore, he led The Mitte Foundation, dedicated to philanthropy and community service, challenging societal stereotypes and promoting broader representation of individuals with disabilities.

In a personal effort to support those with physical disabilities, Mitte partnered with Can Do Canines last year. This organization aids in providing service dogs in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Mitte shared, “I’m very lucky with my disability that I have worked very hard to have the mobility I have today, but I see in many people’s lives, they don’t get the same opportunities.” His legacy lives on through his contributions to entertainment and his tireless advocacy.
