David Cerda: A Stage Legend
David Cerda is celebrated in Chicago for his unique approach to theater. A 1979 graduate of Hammond High School, he is proud of his Hoosier roots. In 2026, Cerda marks the 25th anniversary of his production company, Hell in a Handbag, by reviving one of his favorite parodies featuring Joan Crawford.
A Nod to Joan Crawford
In the play “Joan Crawford Goes to Hell,” Cerda embodies the late Joan Crawford, greeting fans alongside his terrier, Walter, who also makes a cameo. The production, which started on August 21, will run until October 4, 2026. This parody mixes elements from “Mommie Dearest,” Joan Crawford’s autobiography, and her lifestyle book “My Way of Life.” The narrative showcases her life through her daughter’s eyes, played by TJ O’Brien.
The Cast and Crew
Directed by Cheryl Snodgrass, the play features Gretchen Greear and Nicholas Ian as different versions of Joan. Other key roles include Ryan Kenny as assistant Carol Ann, Haley Gillman as young Christina, and Lori Lee in dual roles. This production boasts upgraded wigs, costumes, and sets, accompanied by nostalgic footage from Hollywood’s golden era.
The Legacy of Cerda’s Work
Tickets for the play start at $39 on the Hell in a Handbag website. Cerda’s dedication over the past 25 years has led to significant improvements in production quality. His work has evolved from its original performance space to a celebrated theater production today.
