2 hours ago 0

An OpenAI employee, Abdulrahman Alfozan, was arrested and charged with planting a recording device in a company conference room. The Justice Department announced this development on Tuesday. Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Alfozan, who had been employed by OpenAI as an engineer since July 2025, faced charges for attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications. On September 30, employees discovered the recording device inserted into a USB port on the back of a television in an executive conference room. Investigations revealed that it had been concealed in toilet paper and installed two days before discovery.

The room where the device was hidden was frequently used for discussions on confidential matters such as research, product plans, and business development. OpenAI reported its findings to the FBI and terminated Alfozan’s employment. “The FBI’s investigation is ongoing, and we continue to support their work. Currently, there are no indications of unauthorized access or exfiltration of model weights, source code, or customer data,” stated OpenAI.

OpenAI emphasized the importance of protecting technology and data, noting that their security program safeguards against various threats, including insider risks and cybercriminal activities. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the arrest and ongoing investigation in a statement on social media.

Documents made public revealed that Alfozan inquired about OpenAI’s building addresses, meeting rooms, and schedules. Evidence showed that a chatbot account linked to Alfozan’s spouse submitted prompts related to audio recording device creation and installation.

A photograph included in the complaint captured Alfozan entering the conference room and examining the area where the device was hidden on October 5. Later that day, security personnel found an additional recording device in Alfozan’s unattended bag. Alfozan is scheduled for a detention hearing on October 19.
