Buffalo Bills Face Challenges with Running Back James Cook’s Fumble Issues

1 hour ago 0

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is encountering a significant challenge this NFL season, despite his impressive performance. Cook, currently third in the league for rushing yards with 532 yards, also led the league with 1,621 yards last year. Unfortunately, his tendency to fumble has become a concerning issue through the first five games.

The 27-year-old has fumbled the ball four times, a figure higher than any other player this year. During a recent 37-34 overtime win against the Los Angeles Rams, Cook fumbled twice. His last fumble nearly jeopardized the game for the Bills.

Cook fumbled a total of six times last season. Over the last 23 games, including playoffs, he has fumbled 11 times. This trend has become a source of frustration for head coach Joe Brady. Brady openly hinted that if Cook continues fumbling, a reduction in his playing time might follow.

Right now, we’re putting the ball in harm’s way. The way we lose football games is by turning the ball over. Our two best players turned the ball over last night, and James has put the ball on the ground. Look, he’s doing some good things running the football.

Brady acknowledged Cook’s positive contributions but emphasized the need for improvement in handling the ball. “Putting the ball on the ground is negating all the positives,” he stated, expressing both confidence in and concern for Cook.

Brady mentioned ongoing conversations with Cook about improving ball security. If Cook’s playing time gets reduced as a consequence, the Bills may increase workload for backup running back Ray Davis. Last season, Davis rushed for 275 yards and made 10 catches for 86 yards, scoring two touchdowns.

Additionally, the team has Ty Johnson and Frank Gore Jr. available, who could also contribute with more carries per game if necessary.
