The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with a significant setback as linebacker Dre Greenlaw will not play in Week 6’s ‘Monday Night Football’ against the Washington Commanders. Greenlaw faces a one-game suspension, given by the NFL, for headbutting Ernest Jones, another linebacker, during their recent 32-29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. The incident occurred while Jones was not wearing a helmet, which led to Greenlaw’s ejection from the game.
Greenlaw, a vital player in San Francisco’s defense, has played a crucial role this season. He appealed the suspension, but the decision was upheld by hearing officer James Thrash, who was appointed by the NFL and the NFLPA. Michael Signora, NFL’s senior VP of football & international communications, confirmed the decision publicly.
Greenlaw’s absence is a significant blow for the team. He ranks second in tackles for the 49ers, with 37 tackles, following Fred Warner who has 50. The suspension exacerbates the injury woes that San Francisco is facing this season. The team currently has eight players on injured reserve, including key defensive personnel. Additionally, three other important players, namely Nick Bosa, James Thompson Jr., and Marques Sigle, are out due to injuries.
With Garret Wallow also sidelined due to a hamstring injury, the 49ers will have limited options for their linebacker positions. Fred Warner, Jaden Dugger, Luke Gifford, and Ogbo Okoronkwo are the only linebackers available for the upcoming game, presenting a critical depth challenge.
