Blakeman Criticizes Hochul Over Public Safety in NYC Subway

4 hours ago 0

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman criticized New York Governor Kathy Hochul for policies he argues make New York City subways less safe. During a campaign event on the subway, Blakeman called Hochul the “most pro-criminal governor.” Commuters and tourists in the city reportedly feel unsafe. Violent transit attacks have prompted calls for tougher measures against repeat offenders.

Blakeman, currently a Nassau County executive, has previously served as commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. While campaigning in New York City, he criticized Democrats in a traditionally Democratic area. He proposed hiring more police officers and conductors, cleaning the subways, and helping those with mental illness.

Blakeman asserted that subway crime has surged under Hochul and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani. He pledged to prioritize public safety and improve subway conditions. Blakeman criticized congestion pricing, calling it a tax on the middle class.

Hochul vetoed legislation requiring two-person subway crews, keeping MTA’s one-person operation. Blakeman suggests more police patrols and improving lighting in subways. He emphasized the importance of conductors for commuter security, proposing an increase in their numbers.

Blakeman accused Hochul of supporting policies that compromise public safety. These include cashless bail, Raise the Age, the HALT Act, and Clean Slate law. Hochul’s policies often face criticism from police groups and Republican public safety advocates. Cashless bail restricts judges from requiring bail, while Raise the Age keeps minors out of adult court. The HALT Act limits solitary confinement, and the Clean Slate law conceals certain convictions.

Blakeman’s remarks reflect a broader concern over safety in New York communities. Eric Mack reports on breaking news, with a focus on stories influencing politics, elections, and government.
