Royce White Challenges WNBA’s Eligibility Criteria

2 hours ago 0

Former NBA player Royce White announced plans to pursue legal actions against the WNBA following comments made by Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. Engelbert informed Congress that White and Enes Kanter Freedom are ineligible to play in the WNBA because they are men. White criticized this response, demanding clarity on how the league defines men and women.

White expressed his intent to explore all legal options to hold the WNBA and NBA accountable to their declared standards and values. He did not provide specifics on whether Engelbert’s letter would trigger a discrimination lawsuit but confirmed that exploring legal avenues was being considered.

The controversy began when White and Freedom sought to enter the 2027 WNBA draft, identifying as women. White acknowledged his declaration was for basketball purposes during an interview. Engelbert, responding to inquiries from Republican lawmakers, reiterated that only women could play in the WNBA, referring to White and Freedom as men.

The lawmakers, led by Representative Marlin Stutzman of Indiana, had questioned the definition of “women” in the league’s collective bargaining agreement. The response by Engelbert on October 16 did not clarify the criteria for classifying White and Freedom, focusing instead on the eligibility requirement that only women can play in the WNBA.

“No, we’re not letting them off that easy,” White stated regarding Engelbert’s response. He insisted that the WNBA must define what constitutes a man and a woman.

White called for NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to weigh in and address the controversy. Earlier, league sources had denied the eligibility of the two players in August.

In expressing his admiration for women’s basketball, White highlighted his personal connection to the sport through female relatives and local players. He emphasized his support for women’s sports, wishing it could avoid excessive political intervention. He also mentioned potential attendance at the WNBA Finals, though he withheld details due to security reasons.

Reports by Jackson Thompson, a sports journalist with Fox News Digital, noted White’s involvement in critical political and cultural sports issues. Thompson’s work has influenced federal Title IX enforcement and has been referenced by major media outlets.
