Two police officers who defended the Capitol against a pro-Trump mob on January 6, 2021, have taken legal action against the Trump administration. They aim to prevent the establishment of a nearly $1.8 billion fund, which they claim will reward rioters and right-wing militia groups.
Former Officer Harry Dunn of the U.S. Capitol Police and Officer Daniel Hodges of Washington’s Metropolitan Police filed the lawsuit. They allege the administration created this fund to support insurrectionists and paramilitary groups acting on behalf of President Trump.
The defendants named in the lawsuit include President Trump, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The suit argues that the administration has overstepped its authority by creating the fund without Congressional approval.
Trump administration officials have described the fund as a compensation mechanism for individuals unjustly targeted by the Biden Justice Department and Democrats. However, critics, including some Republicans, view it as a means to channel taxpayer money to Trump’s allies.
Although Trump and his cronies have been secretive about the fund’s ends, reporting leaves no doubt that it will be used, among other purposes, to pay the nearly 1,600 people charged with attacking the Capitol on January 6, 2021,the lawsuit argues.
In response to inquiries about the lawsuit, the White House directed questions to the Justice Department, which has yet to provide a comment.
