The Chicago White Sox lost to the Minnesota Twins 5-1 at Target Field, facing intense pitching. Drew Romo’s single in the sixth broke the Twins’ perfect game, while Braden Montgomery’s ninth-inning hit avoided a shutout. Despite the loss, the Sox took two of three games in the series.
Drew Romo Breaks Perfect Game
Twins’ starter Zebby Matthews retired the first 17 White Sox batters. Drew Romo ended the bid for perfection with a single in the sixth inning. Matthews allowed five hits and one run over 8 1/3 innings. Manager Will Venable acknowledged Matthews’ impressive performance and noted the Sox’s hard contact despite the challenges.
“Him throwing a perfect game didn’t change anything,” Romo stated. “I just stuck to my plan and approach.”
Defense also supported Matthews. Right fielder Luke Keaschall made a diving catch, and center fielder Walker Jenkins chased down a long fly ball. Matthews himself made a crucial play on a grounder in the sixth.
Sox Hurt by Two-Out Scoring
The Twins capitalized with two-out runs. In the first inning, Josh Bell’s single and Trevor Larnach’s double against reliever Tyler Gilbert led to three runs. Ryan Jeffers added to the Twins’ lead with a two-out double in the third, and Keaschall homered late in the game. José Urquidy, pitching five solid innings, showed resilience after a previous difficult outing.
All five Twins’ runs were scored with two outs. Urquidy commented on his improved focus on strikes in his latest game.
Sox Maintain Division Lead
Despite the loss, the White Sox extended their lead in the American League Central. Entering the weekend with a 2 1/2 game lead, they left with an expanded 3 1/2 game advantage. The team decided to quickly move past Sunday’s defeat and focus ahead on key matchups, including a series against the Houston Astros.
“You come here to win a series, and we won a series,” Venable said. “Tough day today. We’ll move on and be ready for Monday.”
