Merck announced a promising development in treating endometrial cancer. A Phase 3 clinical trial demonstrated that sacituzumab tirumotecan (sac-TMT) significantly improves survival rates.
Key Findings from the TroFuse-005 Trial
The trial is the first to show a statistically significant improvement in survival rates compared to chemotherapy among patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer. Involvement included 776 patients whose condition had deteriorated following platinum chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Participants were randomly administered sac-TMT or alternative treatments like doxorubicin or paclitaxel. Sac-TMT was given every two weeks via IV.
The investigational drug sac-TMT is the first antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) to achieve this result for endometrial cancer patients, offering targeted cancer therapy that limits damage to healthy cells.
Improvement in Disease State
Patients receiving sac-TMT showed a notable improvement compared to those receiving treatments chosen by physicians. This treatment also met benchmarks for response rates and exhibited similar side effects as previously observed in studies.
Researcher Insights
Professor Dr. Domenica Lorusso highlighted that sac-TMT addresses urgent needs in patients whose disease progresses after current standard treatments. She stated this marks the first time that a TROP2 ADC offers a viable option in this scenario. Dr. Brian Slomovitz emphasized the rising incidence and mortality of endometrial cancer, surpassing ovarian cancer in the U.S.
Slomovitz mentioned the necessity of better treatments, considering recent advancements but ongoing unmet needs for recurrent conditions. He noted the importance of confirming survival benefits and toxicity profiles as these details will clarify sac-TMT’s role in treatment.
The full data from the study are anticipated to be presented at an upcoming medical meeting.
