An air show at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho faced a sudden cancellation on Sunday when two fighter jets collided midair, subsequently crashing to the ground. All crew members involved managed to eject safely, according to Cmdr. Amelia Umayam, a spokesperson for the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Naval Air Forces. The base confirmed that the four crew members were in stable condition.
The collision occurred approximately two miles northwest of the base during the Gunfighter Skies Air Show’s second day. The aviators were in the midst of an aerial demonstration with two Navy EA-18G aircraft from Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129, based in Whidbey Island, Washington. The incident occurred at 12:10 p.m. local time.
Videos shared on social media depicted the dramatic collision of the jets, followed by a fiery descent and black smoke. Parachutes deploying near the crash site were also visible. The crewmembers safely parachuted out shortly after the midair collision.
Col. David R. Gunter, wing commander of the 366th Fighter Wing, known as the “Gunfighters,” expressed gratitude for the safety of all involved. He commended first responders for their prompt action and thanked attendees for their patience and support. The base went into lockdown at 12:30 p.m. as emergency services responded. Guests had to stay on the base to facilitate response operations and were allowed to leave around 3 p.m.
An Instagram video showcased spectators in an aircraft hangar amidst the rising black smoke. A witness, who recorded the event, described seeing four parachutes and black smoke, noting a calm and controlled atmosphere despite the crash.
The Mountain Home police announced the cancellation of the air show and advised the public to avoid traveling to the base area. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
