Governor Mike Braun communicated with President Donald Trump to expedite a FEMA emergency declaration. Braun expressed condolences in a statement, urging residents to remain cautious of floodwaters. He emphasized the importance of taking safety measures seriously during such incidents.

Flooding in Indianapolis

Floodwaters covered streets and encircled homes in Indianapolis’s Ravenwood neighborhood. Cars became submerged, and residents resorted to kayaks and rowboats to navigate. NBC News drone footage captured the extent of the flooding. Though Indianapolis did not experience the highest rainfall, floodwaters from areas with 6 to 12 inches of rain flowed downstream into the city.

Emergency Response and Rescues

In response, over 90 people and their pets were rescued along the White River as levels rose. Authorities described the flooding as historic, significantly impacting regions from Hamilton County to northern Indianapolis suburbs. In Delaware County, a 58-year-old woman died, possibly due to driving through floodwaters.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett declared a local emergency following heavy rainfall. During a Saturday briefing, he urged residents along the river to evacuate. The Marion County Emergency Management director, Jacob Spence, characterized the flooding as unprecedented and record-setting.

The National Weather Service reported up to 11 inches of rain in some regions over two days. The White River crested over 24 feet in communities like Anderson and Noblesville, breaking records set over 100 years ago. Flash flood warnings and watches persisted across central Indiana, with further rain and thunderstorms expected.

Community and Official Reactions

Videos on social media depicted vehicles marooned in high water, a power pole overturned by gushing waters, and flooded crossroads. The National Guard assisted with rescue operations, and the Indianapolis Fire Department reported rescuing 91 people and 45 pets.

Todd Wilson from the public works department advised residents to follow warnings as water levels continued to rise. Earlier in the week, storms also caused significant disruptions across the Midwest, with damage reported from Chicago to western Pennsylvania.
