Chicago Initiative to Reduce Violence Through Unity

Pastor Corey B. Brooks spearheaded an ambitious initiative to combat violence on Chicago’s South Side. On Sunday, hundreds of men gathered for the ‘1000 Men Unity Gathering,’ an event held at the nearly completed Robert R. McCormick Leadership & Economic Opportunity Center. This site, located at 6620 S. King Drive, was declared a ‘100% violence-free zone’ by organizers, symbolizing a commitment to transforming the area.

Brooks, passionate about creating a peaceful community, stated, Bigger than a building, this is about cultivating a culture where men unite to safeguard families, mentor youth, diminish violence, and leave a lasting legacy. The message reinforced the vision for peace, opportunity, and hope within the community.

The gathering included a diverse group of participants: pastors, fathers, mentors, activists, business leaders, former gang members, and local residents. Their unified presence underscored a commitment to promoting safety, accountability, and opportunities for the South Side.

According to Brooks, about 750 men participated, vowing to maintain a peaceful environment suitable for families and children. We declared this area a peace zone, free from violence, giving young people peace of mind around their safety. This underscores the center’s mission to provide a safe haven.

The center aims to tackle violence and poverty issues through workforce development, mentorship, education, job training, and community engagement. Attendees at the event were given an initial tour of the facility, foreshadowing its future role in empowering South Side generations.

Reflecting on a troubling past, Brooks mentioned that the neighborhood was once considered among the most dangerous in Chicago. Project H.O.O.D. — Helping Others Obtain Destiny — was founded to address these challenges through mentorship, faith, workforce training, and economic initiatives.

Brooks’ efforts and commitment have visibly changed local perceptions; the area is no longer listed among the city’s 35 most dangerous blocks. Community investments and outreach efforts have played key roles in this transformation thread.
