Orange County Responds to Garden Grove Chemical Crisis

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office has launched an anonymous tip hotline and online reporting form to investigate the ongoing chemical crisis in Garden Grove. District Attorney Todd Spitzer has called on the public for any information related to the incident, including details about the chemical release and the operations at GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems. Evacuees have expressed significant distress over the situation. Andrea Luna, alongside her family and pets, has faced difficulties after being forced to leave their home with little notice. She, along with others, is considering legal action against GKN Aerospace for the disruption and expenses incurred.

Shelters have been set up to accommodate those displaced by the crisis. As of Saturday, emergency shelters opened at Kennedy High School in La Palma, and Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach, among others. Various community members have extended support to evacuees, providing food and other necessities.

Firefighters have stabilized the temperature of the compromised chemical tank, critical in averting a potential explosion or rupture. The tank contains methyl methacrylate, a highly volatile chemical. Despite efforts to control the situation, the risk of a major incident remains significant, prompting ongoing evacuations and safety measures.

The chemical leak has drawn attention from state-level authorities, with Governor Gavin Newsom declaring a state of emergency to enhance response capabilities. The state and local agencies are working diligently to manage the crisis and ensure public safety.
