‘Fjord’ Wins Palme d’Or at Cannes

1 month ago 0

The 79th Cannes Film Festival concluded with the presentation of the Palme d’Or to the multilingual drama ‘Fjord.’ Directed by Cristian Mungiu from Romania, the film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. The plot revolves around a Christian couple accused of child abuse, highlighting societal tensions between religious conservatism and social liberalism.

Mungiu, addressing the audience in both English and French, emphasized cinema’s role in tackling societal issues. He reflected on how society is increasingly divided and radicalized. In ‘Fjord,’ a family issue escalates into headline news and symbolizes the conflict between different ideologies.

This victory marks Mungiu’s second Palme d’Or; his first came in 2007 with ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.’

The festival this year was notably quieter than previous years, lacking the presence of major American studios and famous personalities. The absence of a standout favorite in the main competition also contributed to the subdued atmosphere.

Significantly, the top awards for best director, best actress, and best actor featured multiple winners. Before announcing the Palme d’Or, jury president Park Chan-wook lauded the diverse panel, which included Demi Moore and Chloé Zhao.

The Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski won the best director award for ‘Fatherland,’ sharing the prize with Spanish filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi for ‘La Bola Negra.’ This film interlaces stories from various historical periods and centers on an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca, killed at the onset of the Spanish Civil War.
