Emergency Measures in Orange County
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Orange County due to a perilous chemical leak at an aerospace facility. Newsom emphasized the urgency in mobilizing state resources to support local responders and ensure public safety.
Chief Craig Covey of the Orange County Fire Authority reported escalating temperatures within the tank. This has instigated the evacuation of over 50,000 residents. Initially, it was thought the temperature was declining in the Garden Grove tank containing 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate. However, concerns grew when temperatures rose about one degree per hour, reaching 90 degrees Friday night.
Attempted Solutions and Expert Consultations
Covey commented on attempts to stabilize additional tanks near the leaking one, highlighting the dangers faced by emergency crews. Covey has expressed the need for innovative solutions, stating they are consulting with national experts. Contingency plans are in place should the chemical leak or explosion occur.
The potential explosions’ impact remains uncertain as experts continue monitoring the situation. A map detailing a possible blast radius has been circulated, emphasizing the urgency of the measures being taken.
Health Risks Associated with Methyl Methacrylate
Methyl methacrylate, a flammable plastic, poses significant health risks. Exposure can lead to respiratory, skin, and eye irritation, along with nausea and dizziness. Air monitoring efforts are ongoing, with drones tracking tank temperatures.
This chemical has dangerous properties, including a low boiling point and self-heating tendencies, increasing the risk of a runaway reaction.
Evacuation Orders and Public Safety
Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, Orange County’s Health Officer, advises strict adherence to evacuation orders. Areas within a one-mile radius around several cities are under evacuation orders.
Evacuation centers provide refuge, with multiple locations listed for displaced residents. Authorities have not specified when the evacuation orders will be lifted.
School and Event Closures
Garden Grove Unified School District has temporarily closed 15 campuses. The annual Garden Grove Strawberry Festival remains scheduled, though some activities like the marathon and parade have been canceled.
The County Registrar of Voters has altered operations at its Garden Grove Vote Center to serve as a shelter site.
Effect on Local Attractions
Entertainment venues remain operational following safety assessments. Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm are open, with safety teams ready for emergencies.
The Los Angeles Angels game is still on schedule, pending further updates. Safety and monitoring continue to be top priorities for all involved.
