Gen Z in Nepal Leads Disaster Response Efforts
In Nepal, Gen Z is spearheading efforts in rescue, relief, and reconstruction after devastating floods and landslides on August 26. Thousands were reported dead or missing. A team of ten initially set out to distribute relief supplies but shifted focus to active rescues after witnessing the destruction. Sunil Singh, a Gen Z member, expressed to Nepali outlet Ratopati their readiness to lead efforts. Prakash Bam, Secretary of the National Gen Z Citizen Campaign, emphasized the urgency in improving governmental rescue operations. Many citizens remain trapped, and Bam advocates for increased government action, even suggesting international aid. Dissatisfaction with disaster relief management by governments is noted both in Nepal and the United States.
In Altadena, California, A Resilient Tomorrow (ART) was co-founded to address this gap in governmental aid. Following the Eaton Fire, ART began community support through distribution drives. Co-director Savannah Bradley highlighted their dissatisfaction with official responses and the necessity of self-reliance, noting Gen Z’s proactive nature in addressing social needs.
Gen Z’s Philanthropic Trends
A GoFundMe survey in June revealed that 57% of Gen Z includes donations in their annual budget, often cutting personal expenses to support causes. The survey detailed interests in social justice, conservative politics, and children’s charities. ART evolved from responding to the Eaton Fire’s devastation to broader community aid through advocacy and donation initiatives. Bradley articulated the generational drive to act when official support falls short.
Gen Z’s Desire for Meaningful Employment
A Harvard study showed that 79% of young adults aged 18-29 seek jobs centered on positive impact. Richard Weissbourd of Making Caring Common found that helping others is a motivator for many in this demographic. Those in retail, for instance, enjoy assisting customers in finding clothing that boosts confidence. A significant portion of Gen Z desires to contribute positively toward societal improvement.
Maxwell Frost Talks About Gen Z’s Political Engagement
Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.), a member of Gen Z in Congress, confronted baby boomers on the government’s role in issues like student loan debt in Jubilee’s YouTube show “Surrounded.” He argued for Gen Z’s strong political engagement, contrasting with accusations of entitlement and laziness. Frost, unfazed by criticism, shared these discussions are common in his experience in Florida. Despite differing viewpoints, the interaction ended amicably, with many commending him.
Creative Campaign Strategies by Abdul El-Sayed
Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed leveraged pop culture by creating a “Senate Island” campaign, inspired by the “Love Island: USA” reunion. This approach aims to capture the attention of young voters. El-Sayed’s team employs innovative social media strategies to engage with Gen Z, diverging from traditional campaign methods.
Opposing candidate Mike Rogers also engages youths on social media. He discusses plans to restore the American Dream, such as making housing affordable, attracting support even from young Democrats. El-Sayed and Rogers’s campaigns demonstrate diverse methods in connecting with younger voters.
