Explosion and Fire at New York City Shipyard: One Dead, Multiple Injured

1 month ago 0

Tragedy struck a New York City shipyard on Friday when a fire led to two explosions, resulting in the death of one civilian and injuries to 36 others, mostly firefighters and first responders. The incident occurred in a 150-foot by 150-foot metal structure at the back of the shipyard, as reported by officials.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the situation as a complex and rapidly evolving emergency during a news conference. Calls to the fire department began around 3:30 p.m., with reports of smoke and two workers trapped in the building’s basement, according to Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore. Emergency crews arrived within six minutes.

The first explosion happened soon after the teams’ arrival, inflicting serious injuries on several firefighters and civilians, including one fatality. Chief of Department John Esposito noted that during attempts to rescue the trapped workers, a second explosion occurred, leading to further injuries.

Fire Commissioner Bonsignore highlighted the dangers of confined spaces for rescue operations. A fire marshal and a firefighter sustained the most serious injuries. The fire marshal remains in critical but stable condition, suffering a fractured skull and minor brain bleed. The fire department’s chief medical officer, Dr. David Prezant, is monitoring potential brain swelling. The firefighter, initially in serious condition, showed improvement by Friday evening.

Despite the fire still burning, it was under control by Friday night, with more than 200 firefighters on site. Mayor Mamdani stated that a full investigation into the fire’s cause would commence promptly.

Local resident Richard Oviogor told WABC-TV he heard two explosions and felt a significant shock wave. The area, previously owned by Bethlehem Steel Company during World War II, houses several businesses, including a coffee roasting company and a self-storage facility.
