Construction workers narrowly escaped disaster as a crane malfunctioned, sending its arm crashing onto the pool deck of a neighboring luxury high-rise in Miami. Video captured by a bystander, Macie Norrod, revealed the dramatic scene that unfolded.
The footage shows the crane’s arm soaring through the air before smashing through palm trees located on the elevated pool area at the One Plaza West Brickell condo building. Norrod, who witnessed the event from her home office, expressed shock and disbelief at the sight.
“I thought I was about to watch the workers die from being squashed by the weights of the crane,”
Norrod’s video depicted workers in green vests clinging to the structure’s upper portion during the collapse. They eventually climbed down ladders to safety.
The crane was in the process of being assembled and not yet operational when it suffered a failure, according to Miami Fire Rescue spokesperson Lt. Pete Sanchez.
After the malfunction, the arm landed on the rooftop deck, partially submerging in the pool. Firefighters quickly accessed the pool deck, confirming no victims were present. The area was secured to prevent entry while ensuring continued safety.
The construction team confirmed that all workers were accounted for, with no injuries reported. Investigations by Miami’s Building Department and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration are underway.
