Smithsonian Museum Plans on National Mall Stall Amid Political Disputes

1 month ago 0

Efforts to establish a Smithsonian museum on the National Mall encountered significant obstacles this week. Republican lawmakers introduced language concerning “biological women” and the president’s authority over the museum’s location, which led to the project’s collapse.

The proposed legislation would situate the new museum at a site west of the Smithsonian Castle. However, this provision allowed President Donald Trump to select an alternative location, creating further complications.

Political disagreements about transgender rights, alongside President Trump’s expansive plans to reshape Washington, have hindered a bipartisan initiative that spanned more than a decade. This initiative aimed to create a women’s history museum on the National Mall, celebrating the contributions and achievements of women throughout history.
