Rookie Quarterback Mendoza Balances Training and Obligations

1 month ago 0

Rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza is eager to dedicate his time to the Las Vegas Raiders as he prepares for his first NFL training camp. Mendoza recently opted out of visiting the White House alongside his Indiana teammates, who were celebrating a national championship win with President Donald Trump. His priority was to remain focused on practice with the Raiders.

Despite his dedication, Mendoza was required by the league to attend the NFL Players Association Rookie Premier event, which disrupted his practice schedule. Although reluctant, Mendoza expressed his feelings candidly. “I’m going to be completely honest with you. I’d rather be practicing right now, and I was really upset about actually having to miss practice for this,” he shared with Gilbert Manzano of SI.com.

However, Mendoza recognized the importance of the event, despite his frustrations. “It’s still been a great moment to where it was mandatory I be here. I’m not going to feel sorry for myself and feel wishy-washy,” he remarked.

The event provided Mendoza with valuable insights and opportunities. He acknowledged learning new things and emphasized his intention to make the best of the present moment. “I’m going to have a smile on my face and make the most of that present moment,” Mendoza stated. He aimed to leverage NFLPA benefits, connect with mentors, and maximize his time to create a positive impact and better understand his situation.

Mendoza, the top pick of the 2026 draft, is expected to begin the season as a backup to Kirk Cousins. However, circumstances might change, offering him a chance to gain experience on the field depending on Cousins’ performance and the team’s standing. Various analysts, including Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon, anticipate that Mendoza could become the starting player by the season’s end.

Moon commented, “I think [Mendoza will] be in there probably by the halfway point, maybe a little bit after. I think it’s good for him right off the bat to be behind somebody. He doesn’t have to be put out there to the wolves right away until he’s ready, and Kirk can win some football games for them and keep them competitive in games until Fernando is ready.”
