Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) entered the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) main event at Double or Nothing in New York City with significant pressure. Competing in his home state, MJF risked his hair in pursuit of a third AEW world championship against Darby Allin, who had taken the title from him just over a month ago.
The event was notable for Mick Foley’s first appearance with AEW. The wrestling icon had stern words for MJF prior to the match. MJF responded combatively, delivering a low blow to Foley and opponents hoping for Allin’s victory and MJF’s baldness by the night’s end.
On a Memorial Day weekend reminiscent of the Pacific Northwest, the stage was set in Queens for an intense clash. MJF’s strategy kicked in swiftly, avoiding Allin’s initial suicide dive, causing Allin to crash into the announce table instead. MJF capitalized with an apron powerbomb and a package piledriver on the steel steps, eliciting groans from the audience as both wrestlers faced the impact.
In a dramatic exchange, both fighters were visibly exhausted but pressed on. MJF aimed to finish Allin up the ramp, attempting to shave his head before Allin could retaliate. Despite MJF’s efforts, Allin countered, setting MJF up for a dramatic finish atop the scaffolding.
Darby Allin lived up to his showman’s reputation, climbing the scaffolding and leaping onto MJF with a breathtaking move. However, Allin sustained significant damage, bleeding from the head, yet managed to bring MJF back to the ring in an effort to secure his title.
Allin hit a Coffin Drop, but MJF resiliently kicked out at two. An attempt to submit MJF with a Scorpion Death Lock faltered due to fatigue. MJF then seized his chance, countering with an avalanche Tombstone Piledriver, successfully pinning Allin to reclaim the championship.
Achieving his third world title at 30, MJF joined the ranks of wrestling legends such as Lou Thesz, The Rock, and John Cena, to name a few. Additionally, MJF’s hair remained untouched, a noteworthy point for the wrestler.
The aftermath wasn’t favorable for Allin, who was stretchered out before Kevin Knight intervened unexpectedly, delivering a UFO Splash on Allin. Knight’s actions, suggesting a heel turn, await clarification on the forthcoming episode of “Dynamite.”
