The former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason, known for his candid commentary, recently offered his views on a controversial incident in the WNBA involving DiJonai Carrington and Sophie Cunningham. His take resonated with many sports fans.

The incident took place during a match between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever on August 8th. Carrington committed a hard foul on Cunningham in the game’s first quarter, which gained attention on its own. However, Carrington’s subsequent actions heightened the situation. She posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE” on Instagram Threads, suggesting that her ejection was racially motivated, relating to being a black woman while Cunningham is white.

Esiason addressed the situation on his radio show, ‘Boomer and Gio’, questioning how the audience should react to such a post. He referred to Carrington’s actions as “stupid” and proposed that the foul and Carrington’s reaction might be a directed attack based on personal animosity. His co-host, Gregg Giannotti, agreed with this assessment.

Flagrant Foul and Public Reaction

During the game, Carrington’s foul was reviewed and classified as a Flagrant 2, leading to her ejection. Despite inquiries, the WNBA has yet to publicly address Carrington’s foul or her comments.

The controversy relates to a broader discussion about Cunningham’s stance on gender and sports. Following her EsPN interview in July, Cunningham faced criticism for her views against biological men competing in women’s sports. She explained her position as wanting to protect young girls in sports environments, emphasizing honesty and safety while rejecting accusations of hate.

A poll by the New York Times in March 2025 found that 79% of Americans opposed men competing in women’s sports, underscoring the contentious nature of this subject.

Despite the incident, Carrington played for the Sky shortly after, scoring impressively with 26 points in 27 minutes during a game against the Seattle Storm.
