Controversy Surrounds 11U Baseball Tournament Incident

The travel baseball scene faced controversy over Memorial Day weekend following allegations from a Nebraska coach. The incident took place at a USSSA tournament in Kansas City, where accusations arose of an Oklahoma coach instructing his 11U pitcher to target an opposing player.

Nebraska coach Brandon Magni claimed that the Oklahoma team, coached by Mychal Ryals, allegedly directed a pitcher to aim a fastball at one of his players, Easton. Magni stated on Facebook that when Easton protested to the umpire, the Oklahoma coach redirected the pitcher to throw at the Nebraska dugout instead. This resulted in a dangerous 70 mph fastball hitting one of Magni’s players.

Despite the altercation, the player was ejected from the game according to Magni. Yet, the pitcher remained in the dugout, and the Oklahoma coach was not removed from the tournament complex.

“Today all of my boys learned a life lesson,” Magni wrote. “We shook their hands and used the incident as motivation to finish the game strong.”

A mother from Nebraska commented on Instagram, describing the occurrence as shocking, adding that the team was merely cheering excitedly during a close match.

The incident ignited discussions about sportsmanship and safety in youth sports. Magni reported requesting the opposing team’s forfeiture. However, he said his team was advised that they could either forfeit the game or contact the authorities.

This event adds to ongoing concerns about behavior in youth sports, prompting discussions on appropriate conduct and fair play. Efforts to address these issues will likely continue as the season progresses.
