President Donald Trump has set his sights on Republican critics, with a recent focus on GOP Sen. John Cornyn of Texas. Trump labeled Cornyn as “VERY disloyal” and endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for the GOP Senate nomination. This endorsement highlights Trump’s influence on the Republican Party and his impact on GOP nomination races.
The runoff election’s winner will compete against Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in the general election, a race that could decide the Senate majority. Talarico aims to become the first Democrat in decades to win a Senate seat in Texas. Alongside the Senate race, runoffs for Texas Attorney General and several U.S. House seats are also on the ballot.
Trump’s attack on Cornyn follows his involvement in recent races, including helping to unseat critics like Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Rep. Tom Massie of Kentucky. In supporting Paxton, Trump praised him as a “MAGA Warrior” who consistently delivers for Texas. Cornyn, however, has emphasized his past support for Trump and his agenda.
Paxton has been a controversial figure due to legal challenges and scandals. Recently, he was impeached by the Texas House but acquitted by the state senate. His personal life also faces scrutiny amid a messy divorce. Cornyn has argued that if Paxton becomes the nominee, it could harm Republican chances in the general election.
The Texas runoffs also see Rep. Chip Roy facing state Sen. Mayes Middleton for attorney general. Middleton has invested heavily in his campaign, but Roy has gained significant support. Disputes in their race focus on experience and loyalty to Trump’s agenda.
Additionally, the majority-Latino 35th Congressional District in Texas hosts a contentious Democratic runoff featuring housing activist Maureen Galindo and Deputy Johnny Garcia. Controversial remarks by Galindo have increased support for Garcia. The district’s eventual Democratic nominee will face a Republican opponent in November.
Other notable races include Democratic runoffs in Houston’s 18th Congressional District, where incumbent Rep. Al Green faces Rep. Christian Menefee, and the newly drawn right-leaning 9th Congressional District, where Trump-endorsed Alex Mealer competes against Briscoe Cain.
