GOP Resolution Targets Foreign-Born Congress Members

1 month ago 0

Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, seems unfazed by a GOP resolution aiming to prevent foreign-born individuals from serving in Congress. When asked about the proposed legislation, Omar responded to Fox News Digital, saying, ‘Good luck to her.’

GOP’s Proposed Amendment

Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, announced a proposal for a constitutional amendment. This amendment seeks to ensure that any member of Congress, federal judges, or Senate-confirmed officers must be natural-born citizens. This standard mirrors that required for the presidency and vice presidency in the United States.

Mace recently pointed out three individuals in Congress, including Omar, as examples on social media. Omar was born in Somalia and became a U.S. citizen in 2000.

Ilhan Omar. Shri Thanedar. Pramila Jayapal. All born in foreign countries, none were citizens by birth. All sitting in the United States Congress. All making clear every single day their loyalty is not to America.

Currently, there are 26 members in Congress who are not natural-born citizens. Among them, 19 are Democrats, and seven are Republicans. Mace argues that those in power should be natural-born citizens, emphasizing concerns about loyalty.

Constitutional Change Challenges

Changing the Constitution is challenging. It requires a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate, followed by ratification from three-fourths of U.S. states. The proposal hasn’t gained significant support from GOP leadership or Republican co-sponsors.

Dual Citizenship Controversy

Omar was also questioned about Rep. Randy Fine’s ‘Disqualifying Dual Loyalty Act.’ This legislation would prevent anyone with dual citizenship from serving in Congress, requiring them to renounce foreign citizenship.

I think it’s a fair argument to say you can only swear allegiance to one country, and if you’re in Congress, that allegiance should be to America.

Though introduced in October, Fine’s proposal remains stagnant in Congress, with no significant progress reported.
