Elgin Recognized as a Top Place in Illinois

Elgin has achieved the rank of sixth-best place to live in Illinois according to U.S. News & World Report. The evaluation criteria included value, quality of life, desirability, and job market strength. Elgin boasts a population of nearly 116,000 people. The median home price stands at approximately $280,000, and the median rent is about $1,200 per month. The median annual household income exceeds $94,000. The job market in Elgin is comparable to other cities of its size.

Additionally, Elgin holds the 23rd spot as the best medium-sized city to reside in the United States. It ranks 74th as the best place to live overall in the country. Moreover, Elgin is the 217th best place for retirement, as noted by the magazine.

Registration Open for Kids United Program

The Elgin Police Department’s Kids United program is now open for registration. This program will operate from June 22 to August 11 at Abbott Middle School, located at 949 Van St., Elgin. Providing various free activities, the program includes art, sports, cooking, swimming, and life skills lessons. Meals will be available for participating children.

Drop-in sessions are designated for residents and students in Elgin and Elgin Township, specifically those attending School District U-46 schools. Huffman Park Courts Closed for Renovations

The tennis courts at Huffman Park, located at 811 Tartans Drive, West Dundee, are temporarily closed. The Dundee Township Park District cites unsafe surface conditions as the reason for the closure. Renovations will involve court replacements and conversion of some space for pickleball use, with completion expected this fall.

In the meantime, tennis can be played at nearby parks. Open courts are available at Grafelman Park (112 N. Fifth St., West Dundee), Lions Park (570 Penny Ave., East Dundee), and Sleepy Hollow Park (875 Winmoor Drive, Sleepy Hollow). Note that pickleball lines are also marked at Grafelman and Lions parks.

Free Music Performances in St. Charles

STC Live! offers a series of free music events this summer. Performances will occur twice weekly starting Wednesday, June 3, at First Street Plaza in downtown St. Charles, along with other local businesses. A total of over 35 acts are scheduled to perform through September 28, with shows beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays.

On June 3, Matt Keen will perform at The Office Dining & Spirits (201 E. Main St.) and Leslie Hunt will feature at First Street Plaza. The full schedule is available at stcalliance.org/stclive. Jenna Sawicki, the St. Charles Business Alliance executive director, highlights the community’s vibrant music scene with these free public concerts.

Batavia’s Flag Day Celebration

Batavia will observe Flag Day, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, on June 14. The event will start at 1 p.m. at the Batavia City Council chambers within the downtown Jeffery D. Schielke Government Center.

Historical flags from the Revolutionary War era to present will be showcased from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The American flag will be raised at 2:45 p.m. at the Flag Day Monument on the Riverwalk, followed by The Star-Spangled Banner. Additional activities include performances by the Batavia Community Band, poster contest awards, a tribute to veterans and first responders, the unveiling of new personalized bricks, and a ribbon-cutting for the Liberty Education Plaza.
