NextEra Energy, a powerful political entity in Florida, has often clashed with regulators, residents, consumer groups, and journalists. The company’s current ambition to acquire Dominion Energy indicates its drive to become the largest utility and power company in the United States.
This aggressive approach has been evident in legal disputes and public records. In 2023, a group of shareholders filed a federal lawsuit against NextEra, claiming its political activities jeopardized their investments, resulting in a significant decline in stock value. Allegations included possible violations of election laws, surveillance of journalists, and questionable tactics aimed at acquiring a municipal utility. The lawsuit also raised concerns about the honesty of NextEra’s executives regarding these activities.
NextEra responded by conducting two reviews, both concluding without findings of unlawful conduct. The company also stated that shareholders did not demonstrate that executive statements were intended to deceive or resulted in financial losses. Although the District Court initially dismissed the case, a federal appeals court reinstated it in November. Both parties informed the District Court they anticipate submitting a settlement for approval by June 15.
