Deadly Earthquake Strikes Indonesia, Causes Panic and Destruction

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the sea off the coast of Indonesia early Saturday morning. At least 20 people lost their lives in this disaster, which led to the collapse of buildings and homes, sparking panic across a region susceptible to deadly quakes.

Authorities reported six injuries and confirmed that two people were missing following a landslide triggered by the quake. Initially, there was a tsunami alert urging coastal residents to move to higher ground, later canceled after the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency found no significant sea level changes threatening coastal communities.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) detailed that the earthquake impacted the Flores region at a depth of 10 kilometers, striking at 5:58 AM local time. Its epicenter lay 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende city in East Nusa Tenggara Province. Aftershocks followed the initial quake.

Rescue Operations and Damages

Fathur Rahman, chief of the Maumere Search and Rescue Agency, stated that rescuers retrieved at least 20 bodies from the devastated areas of Sikka, West Manggarai, and East Manggarai. This included eight bodies recovered from a landslide in Reok village, Manggarai. Six individuals with severe injuries were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Rahman mentioned that rescuers are still searching for two villagers believed to be buried under the mud loosened by landslides. Landslides in Ende Regency interrupted the Trans-Flores road, a crucial 700-kilometer paved mountain route from Labuan Bajo to Larantuka.

Infrastructure and Communication Challenges

Nusa Tenggara Timur Police Chief Rudi Darmoko reported serious damages, including collapsed structures and power outages in affected towns and villages. These issues have disrupted communication and complicated search and rescue efforts.

Local television broadcasts displayed patients being evacuated from hospital buildings as a precaution. Medical staff moved equipment outdoors to set up temporary treatment areas under the emergency conditions.

Emergency Response

The National Disaster Management Agency deployed a helicopter to assist with logistics and emergency operations. This support is vital in Nusa Tenggara Timur due to the complex geography of many islands, presenting notable transport and access challenges.

Around 2,000 villagers in Nagekeo Regency fled to temporary shelters. The seismic event was strongly felt across Flores Island, with reports of significant damage.

Impact Across Regions

Yohanna Embu from Sikka Regency recounted damage to various structures and residents rushing to higher ground. Damages also occurred in Bima, a city in West Nusa Tenggara, and parts of South Sulawesi.

Initially, Indonesian authorities released a tsunami alert for sectors of East and West Nusa Tenggara and Southern Sulawesi but later lifted it. The geological agency pinpointed the shallow offshore quake near Flores Island.

Historical Context

Indonesia, an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” In 1992, a powerful quake and tsunami killed approximately 2,500 people on Flores. A 7.5 magnitude quake in 2018 led to a localized tsunami and significant destruction, especially in Palu, causing more than 4,400 deaths. Another significant event was the 9.1 magnitude quake in 2004, generating a tsunami that claimed 230,000 lives across several countries.
