By June 1, 2026, prosecutors announced that the bus driver involved in a tragic highway crash in Virginia, which resulted in the deaths of five people, now faces additional legal charges. The driver, Jing Sheng Dong, aged 48, originally from Staten Island, New York, has been indicted on three extra felony counts of involuntary manslaughter and a misdemeanor charge for reckless driving. These charges come on top of two counts of involuntary manslaughter for which he was charged earlier on Saturday.
Stafford Commonwealth District Attorney Eric Olsen revealed that each involuntary manslaughter charge carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The crash, which occurred early on May 30, resulted in injuries to nearly four dozen people, including Dong. He remains hospitalized and will be transferred to Rappahannock Regional Jail upon release.
The Virginia State Police’s investigation indicated traffic was slowing in the southbound lane of Interstate 95 in Stafford County due to approaching a work zone. Dong allegedly did not decelerate for the reduced traffic and struck six vehicles at approximately 2:35 a.m. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting a joint investigation with state police to determine the specifics of the incident.
The bus, operated by E&P Travel of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, was traveling from New York to North Carolina. The sequence began when the bus collided with a Chevrolet Suburban, which then crashed into an Acura SUV and other vehicles. Of the victims, four were family members traveling in the Acura, including Dmitri Doncev, 45, his wife Ecterina, 44, and their children, Emily, aged 13, and Mark, aged 7. This family, from Greenfield, Massachusetts, was en route to a wedding in South Carolina. The 25-year-old victim from the Suburban was identified as Priscilla Mafalda from Worcester, Massachusetts.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to finalize the details surrounding the conditions and actions leading to the crash.
