Pelley questioned Bilton about the recent dismissals of Bilton’s predecessor, Tanya Simon, and other correspondents. He labeled Bilton’s qualifications as “slender” and criticized Weiss’s impact on “CBS Evening News.” According to Status, Pelley stated, “She’s murdering ‘60 Minutes.’”

CBS’s Response to Pelley

CBS News did not immediately comment. However, a source close to CBS News leadership shared that Weiss and Bilton had tried to engage Pelley privately, emphasizing his importance to the show. This source expressed disappointment over the public airing of the issues.

The New York Times confirmed listening to a recording of the meeting. They noted Pelley’s voice was shaking during the heated exchange. An unnamed executive mentioned that Weiss was ready to attend the meeting, but her presence was discouraged.

These developments follow a memo circulated by Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski. The memo outlined a “new approach” to modernize “60 Minutes,” aiming to expand its influence across CBS News. It emphasized fair and fearless reporting.

The memo highlighted Bilton’s energy and ambition, comparing him to the show’s founders. Despite the tension, Pelley received applause from colleagues during the meeting. Bilton, however, remained unfazed, asserting his journalistic experience and confidence.
