A couple renovating a 19th-century church in upstate New York has captured the attention of millions online. Their discovery? Two exterior windows that seem to belong to a non-existent room.
Lauren Gunderman, 31, shared with Newsweek that she and her partner are converting the 1872 church into a luxury venue for weddings and events. The Stately on Main, previously a Presbyterian church in Waterville, has been the focus of their search for a potential hidden space within its walls.
Their investigation has spurred widespread intrigue online. Many have contributed theories, warnings, and even expert opinions to solve the mystery. In a video shared on Instagram by @127eastmain on May 25, the couple attempts to access the “mystery room.”
The video highlights their efforts to break into what they believe is an entry point in the ceiling. Wooden boards covered the suspected area, and they started removing them in hopes of finding a way inside. The video is captioned with, “How do we get into this mystery room?”
Their search began when they noticed two windows that did not align with any interior space. Convinced a hidden room existed, they began their exploration. At one point, they found a small covered opening where they thought the room might be. After removing the boards and lowering a phone into the gap, they found only more structure, not a hidden room.
The video’s caption humorously noted Gunderman’s attire: “Another attempt at getting into the mystery room in my 1872 church! Why am I wearing pink slides with socks?” Gunderman explained they believed accessing the space through the floor would work, but they discovered only more flooring.
Though they haven’t accessed the room, insights from viewers might have solved the mystery. Gunderman revealed, “After many comments from organ experts, I’ve learned the windows were probably covered inside the organ room after electrification, but I don’t want to disrupt the pipes. So, we may never know for sure!”
The video went viral, earning over 4.9 million views and 137,000 likes. Online comments reflected a mix of intrigue and caution. User Jk_its_me_scarlett quipped, “So you bought an old church with a boarded off room… and your first thought was how do we get in there? That’s where the demon sleeps.” Another, Oscar.a.mejia, remarked, “Old church, boarded up room, yep I’m not opening that up!”
Starcatcher1966 added, “You found a sealed-off space and thought, how do I get in? Nope nope nope… have it blessed and hope whatever is in there stays put.”
