The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to take place from June 11 to July 19, with signage already visible at the World Trade Center transportation hub in New York. Attendees arriving in New York City and New Jersey will encounter a robust transportation system enhanced by numerous upgrades. Significant changes will include expansions in bus and metro services and the introduction of dedicated travel corridors.

This summer’s events may coincide with an exciting NBA championship series featuring the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed confidence in handling this influx of visitors. ‘It’s not just the Knicks, it’s the Knicks-plus, what a year,’ she stated, encouraging tourism amid the high-profile occasions. Madison Square Garden will host the Knicks against the Spurs on June 8 and 10, with a potential game on June 16.

In East Rutherford, N.J., the New York New Jersey Stadium will hold its first World Cup match between Brazil and Morocco on June 13. Governor Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have outlined strategies to manage the anticipated surge in mass transit users, predicting up to 100,000 additional riders during game days.

Potential interventions include more frequent bus and subway schedules and the creation of special lanes for buses and emergency services. Construction and deliveries will be halted in specified areas to ease traffic congestion. Despite these measures, Mayor Mamdani acknowledged some unavoidable road congestion. He suggested that New Yorkers leave their cars at home and opt for cycling, walking, or using public transport.

Officials are preparing for a possible NBA Finals game in Manhattan on June 16, coinciding with a World Cup match between France and Senegal. ‘This is a moment we’ve been preparing for,’ Mamdani stated, assuring that the city is fully ready.

Security measures are also a priority, with plans to enhance policing and cybersecurity to mitigate risks of crime and terrorism. Governor Hochul noted that subway crime has reached its lowest in 16 years, reflecting strong safety efforts. Additional precautions are in place for extreme weather and traffic issues.

The final match of the World Cup is scheduled for July 19 at the New York New Jersey Stadium, marking the culmination of an event-filled summer.
