A.J. Brown, now with the New England Patriots, recently faced his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, during joint training camp practices. Brown’s transfer to the Patriots happened after a challenging 2025 season for both him and the Eagles’ offense. Philadelphia traded him for future draft picks, as his relationship with quarterback Jalen Hurts had reportedly weakened.
Despite more than two months passing since his move, questions about his relationship with Hurts arose. After the recent Eagles-Patriots practice, Brown confirmed he had not spoken to Hurts since the trade. When asked, his response was a simple, “No.” Nevertheless, Brown maintained a positive tone when speaking about his former teammates.
Honestly guys, none of that stuff even matters, man. You all should want to report something positive. You know asking the question is going to turn negative. So let’s not get into that. Let’s keep everything positive. It’s love my way.
Hurts also commented positively about Brown, expressing continued affection.
Brown expressed a willingness to reconnect with Hurts during the joint practices. His record with the Eagles includes the two highest single-season receiving yardage marks in the team’s history, with 1,496 yards in 2022 and 1,456 in 2023. Despite his achievements, Brown asked for a team change after the Eagles’ wild-card exit in January, as attributed by General Manager Howie Roseman. Sources suggested his frustrations included feeling under-targeted in zone coverage.
During the 2025 season, Brown’s social media activity and media comments hinted at his dissatisfaction with his role. At the recent practice, he was seen conversing with former teammates Saquon Barkley and Cooper DeJean. During drills, Brown connected on all targets from quarterback Drake Maye, although he missed a pass against Quinyon Mitchell, an All-Pro cornerback.
Brown praised Maye, noting the developing chemistry between them. He highlighted Maye’s ability to simplify his role on the field through their budding partnership.
There’s definitely been some challenges, but he’s very special, and he makes my job a lot easier. Just learning how he sees the game and getting on the same page.
Brown also expressed that the joint practices with the Eagles did not signify closure for his time with Philadelphia. He conveyed ongoing fondness for the city and the team, despite his commitment to New England.
It’s love. I won a Super Bowl ring with them. It will always be love no matter how anyone feels. I love Philly and I will always love Philly but I’m here now. That’s where my feet are and that’s what I’m focused on.
The Eagles begin their regular season on September 13 against the Washington Commanders. The Patriots will start their 2026 season with a matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on September 9.
