The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a new era with the departure of LeBron James, marking the first season in eight years without him in the lineup. Over previous seasons, James consistently set records and achieved historic milestones with the Lakers. Notably, he shared several memorable moments with his son, Bronny James, who was drafted 55th overall by the Lakers in 2024. These included a game where they both recorded the first father-to-son and son-to-father assists.
LeBron James has now moved on to explore free agency, and after much speculation about returning to either the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat, he secured a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.
During the Lakers’ media session that kicked off the training camp, Bronny James spoke about the upcoming season without his father on the team. He reflected, stating, “Feels like he’s not here… He’s my dad. I spent almost 22 years with him, so, just another experience that I’m gonna be a part of, and I’m excited how it’s gonna feel during the season.” Bronny described the situation as “something different.”
The Lakers have revamped their roster this offseason. They acquired big man Walker Kessler through a sign-and-trade deal with the Utah Jazz. Additionally, the team strengthened its backcourt with the additions of guards Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton.
Last season, Bronny James had a supporting role on the Lakers’ roster and occasionally played for their G League affiliate, the Coachella Valley Lakers. He participated in 42 games, averaging 2.9 points, 1.2 assists, and 0.6 rebounds over an average of 8.9 minutes per game. The upcoming season raises questions about whether Bronny will emerge as an NBA star or find challenges in the same league where his father thrived. Bronny expressed anticipation, “I’m excited for the experience, to experience something different with him not being here and to see how the staff treats me without him being there and all my teammates and stuff like that. I’m excited for it, and I’m excited for the season.”
The Lakers are set to begin their regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 21, in a matchup against the Golden State Warriors. A potential highlight arises on Christmas Day when Bronny James may face LeBron James on the court as the Lakers host the 76ers.
