A Refreshed ‘Dirty Dancing: The Musical’ Brings Elegance to the Stage

3 weeks ago 0

Director Lonny Price has revitalized “Dirty Dancing: The Musical,” offering a fresh experience on stage. Historically, this title—rooted in nostalgia from the 1987 film with Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze—has struggled to achieve theatrical respect and quality. Previous iterations were marred by lackluster video effects and performances, often seen as exploiting the movie’s fanbase.

This new touring production, which recently opened at the Nederlander Theatre in Chicago, aims higher. Darrell Grand Moultrie, known for his work with Beyoncé, has enhanced the choreography. He keeps it grounded in the show’s era, focusing on the pivotal role of social dancing—an essential factor in the film’s popularity. The updated music now embraces the American songbook with selections like “Fly Me to the Moon,” elevating the auditory experience.

Price has cast the show strategically, filling key roles with accomplished dancers. Blake Zelesnikar as Johnny, Olivia Cece as Penny, and newcomer Annalese Starzec as Baby bring strong dance skills and genuine engagement to the stage. Starzec’s resemblance to Jennifer Grey adds authenticity to her performance.

Though the original script by Eleanor Bergstein remains, the improved design by Brett J. Banakis enhances the experience, spotlighting the Catskills’ charm. With committed actors delivering their lines and Bryan Fenkart paying homage to Jerry Orbach as Jake Houseman, the production achieves a more sophisticated presence.

Supporting roles shine with powerful vocals from Ashley LaLonde and Erick Pinnick. While the story stays true to its cinematic roots, “Dirty Dancing” remains a beloved tale. Fans will find joy in the refreshed stage version.
