Aaron Rodgers has decided to return for his 22nd NFL season, but the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback says it will be his last. The 42-year-old confirmed on Wednesday that he will not play a 23rd season.
Rodgers considered retiring after Steelers coach Mike Tomlin stepped down following a playoff loss to Houston. His outlook changed when Mike McCarthy was hired as Tomlin’s replacement, a move Rodgers may have influenced. Rodgers and McCarthy previously spent 13 seasons together in Green Bay, winning a Super Bowl.
Rodgers expressed excitement about reuniting with familiar faces from Green Bay now part of the Steelers’ staff. He described the situation as a series of unexpected, surreal moments.
Last season, Rodgers threw for 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions, helping the Steelers win the AFC North title. Yet, injuries and his age were visible during the playoff loss to the Texans.
McCarthy praised Rodgers’ throwing ability, emphasizing his value to the team as a mentor. Pittsburgh has already started planning for the future by drafting Penn State quarterback Drew Allar and focusing on developing younger talent.
Rodgers’ experience offers an advantage as Allar and Will Howard learn the team’s offensive strategies. McCarthy sees Rodgers as a valuable resource in preparing the team for the post-Rodgers era.
While humorously referencing a past statement by Brett Favre about mentoring, Rodgers embraces the role. However, he remains focused on winning in his final season.
The Steelers have strengthened their roster by acquiring wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., signing running back Rico Dowdle, and drafting wide receiver Germie Bernard. Changes to the offensive line should also improve team performance.
With experienced players like Cam Heyward and TJ Watt on defense, and an eager Rodgers, the Steelers aim to succeed in the upcoming season. Rodgers’ journey concludes with him looking forward to his eventual induction into the Hall of Fame.
