Acting Director of National Intelligence, William Pulte, revealed on Sunday that his office has completed a fourth series of layoffs. In a post on social media platform X, he stated that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) had been downsized in a careful, strategic manner to concentrate on national security and adhere to the legal framework.
Pulte expressed gratitude, saying, “As of this evening, we finished a 4th round of thoughtful, measured layoffs. Thank you!” This marks a continued effort to streamline the ODNI since Pulte assumed his role.
President Donald Trump had appointed Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, to serve as acting DNI. His appointment followed the departure of Tulsi Gabbard, who stepped down due to personal reasons concerning her husband’s health.
In a past post from July 10, Pulte highlighted that U.S. National Intelligence operations have become more efficient and effective. The third wave of staff reductions focused on eliminating redundancy and non-essential roles.
Trump identified Pulte as the acting DNI after expressing a desire for a more compact ODNI. During an interview reported by the Wall Street Journal, he implied that the office housed unnecessary personnel, suggesting a preference for Pulte to begin the layoff process.
Trump later announced Jay Clayton, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, as his nominee for the permanent DNI position.
Following the layoffs, Pulte used his personal X account to express his appreciation for Trump’s confidence in him. He lauded the achievements made within a few weeks concerning both operational progress and transparency. “So deeply grateful to POTUS for letting me be acting Director of National Intelligence. He is, truly, the best, and it is a blessing to work for him,” Pulte said.
The recent decisions under Pulte’s leadership reflect the evolving strategy to restructure the Intelligence Community under Trump’s administration.
